NVIDIA Hopper GPU to tape out soon

A new rumor suggests that NVIDIA Hopper could tape out soon.

NVIDIA Hopper architecture was teased through many leaks for more than 2 years now. The architecture is NVIDIA’s first approach to Multi-Chip-Module (MCM) design and direct competition to upcoming Intel Xe-HP/C and AMD CDNA2 GPUs.

Yesterday a mysterious tweet was made by Greymon55. Greymon55 is relatively a new name on the leak scene, however, this is just an alternative account of someone that used to share a lot of leaks from AMD roadmaps. The leaker is yet to prove himself as reliable when it comes to NVIDIA leaks.

This tweet was quickly decoded by another user – “KD”. Unfortunately, the original tweet was already removed, but all messages were screenshotted and stiched together by 3DCenter . The message says that “NVIDIA Hopper Will Tape Out Soon”, suggesting that a mid-2022 launch is plausible.

The details on the GPU are not confirmed, but there is a long list of rumors associated with this architecture. For starters, it will be based on TSMC 5nm node and feature a new GPU design structure.

The GPU is to feature two dies with a total of 288 Streaming Multiprocessors, which is 2.6x more than Ampere-based NVIDIA A100. Such a configuration on a more power-efficient node and architecture may provide a performance uplift up to three times over its predecessor. This has been teased by @kopite7kimi, who was among the first to share details on the Hopper architecture:

I should explain that.
A GPM of GH100 could have 8(4*2, it seems like GA100)GPC*9Clusters(big changes, add CPCs).
perf: GH100=3XGA100

NVIDIA Hopper is not a gaming architecture. The first ‘graphics’ card to feature this GPU is likely NVIDIA H100, a successor to a data Jcenter accelerator known as A100. NVIDIA is also working on its Ada Lovelace, which is a gaming architecture. judging from the recent leaks though, it shouldn’t be expected anytime soon, certainly not as soon as Hooper.
