Intel confirms Xe3p-LPG graphics architecture for Core Ultra 400 “Nova Lake-P”

Mobile Core Ultra 400 with Xe3p-LPG graphics

Intel has started upstream Linux driver work for Nova Lake-P, and the patches confirm the platform uses Xe3p_LPG for graphics. Do note, however, that not all Nova Lake chips will use this GPU architecture, you can find more details on this in our previous coverage .

This follows Intel’s recent iGPU cadence. Xe2 arrived with Lunar Lake and pushed Core 200V iGPUs closer to AMD’s RDNA 3.5 based Radeon 800M parts. Panther Lake is expected to move to Xe3. Nova Lake is the next, and it now has public Linux enablement tied to Xe3P.

The patch series describes Nova Lake-P as a client platform built from three IP blocks. If you were ever wondering what LPG, LPM and LPD stands for, this is a good explanation straight from Intel:

“NVL-P is a new Intel platform that comes with the following IPs:

  • Xe3p_LPG (graphics)
  • Xe3p_LPM (media)
  • Xe3p_LPD (display)

Enabling patches for Xe3p_LPM and Xe3p_LPD are already integrated in our driver. In this series we add patches enabling Xe3p_LPG and then follow up with patches enabling NVL-P as a platform in our driver.”

Phoronix reports that media and display enablement were already present in the driver, and this new series adds the Xe3p_LPG graphics engine plus the platform integration for NVL-P. The same patch set adds nine PCI device IDs for Nova Lake-P graphics. Some IDs can end up unused, or stay tied to engineering samples. That part is normal for early enablement.

For now, the driver lists Xe3P_LPG as carrying over the feature set already enabled for Xe2, while also flagging that new features will follow later.

Intel Core Ultra 400 series codenamed “Nova Lake” are now expected to launch end this year, as recently confirmed by Intel . The company did not, however, confirm whether that means a laptop or desktop launch.
