GTA 6 world is “handcrafted,” Zelnick says, while AI tools cut time and cost

Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the most anticipated games right now. What arrives in a few months on gaming consoles first will shape what gamers consider acceptable, both in terms of quality and price. Right now, we know nothing about the gameplay itself, but judging from the trailer, it is easy to say the game will bring gamers a brand-new experience.
GTA 6 was also announced just as generative AI started to take off. Gamers have been making fake videos and screenshots for it like no other game before. Generative AI could be useful for a world as large as GTA’s, but it does not need to be used everywhere, and it may not even touch the visual side. However, Take-Two’s CEO has a different opinion.

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick says generative AI is not being used to build Grand Theft Auto VI. In a GamesIndustry.biz interview, Zelnick said the company uses AI across the business, but mainly inside internal tools and workflows. In other words, they use AI, just not for the creative part that will face users.
This company’s products have always been built with machine learning and artificial intelligence. We’ve actually always been a leader in the space, and right now we have hundreds of pilots and implementations across our company, including within our studios. And we’re already seeing instances where generative AI tools are driving costs and time efficiencies.
— Strauss Zelnick, TakeTwo CEO
Zelnick described Take-Two as a long-time user of machine learning and AI, with “hundreds of pilots and implementations” running across the company, including inside studios. Zelnick also said “generative AI tools” are already reducing costs and saving time in some areas. Zelnick explained those gains as tooling benefits, not content creation. He also said Grand Theft Auto VI is handcrafted and built “from the ground up,” rather than generated. Zelnick tied that approach to what separates Rockstar’s open worlds from the rest.
Specifically with regards to GTA 6, Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building. Their worlds are handcrafted. That’s what differentiates them. They’re built from the ground up, building by building, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood. They’re not procedurally generated, they shouldn’t be. That’s what makes great entertainment.
— Strauss Zelnick, TakeTwo CEO
Personally, I think generative AI could fit GTA well for text or voice conversations with NPCs. NVIDIA has been exploring this technology for some time. It could add more variety to interactions across the open world.
As reported earlier, Take-Two has no plans to change the release date again. The game was originally announced for May, but it is now targeting November 19. Of course, this date applies to the console launch, and PC players are still waiting for any confirmation on a release.
