Afterburner will put your GPU into lower power state if problems are detected (as long as you have new MSI PSU)

As you may recall, MSI announced a new series of power supplies at CES 2026. None of these are available yet, but they bring a very interesting feature that will work with any RTX 50 (or even RX 9000) card, as long as it uses a modern 16-pin power connector.
MSI Afterburner is primarily known as an overclocking tool. It is widely used for adjusting GPU clocks, voltages, and power limits, while also providing monitoring and an on-screen display. The utility works across many graphics cards, not only MSI models, which has made it a standard tool for enthusiasts.
Creator and developer Unwinder has put a lot of effort into ensuring full compatibility with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 series, especially MSI cards. These changes extend monitoring and control paths needed for newer power designs and sensors. The work also aligns Afterburner with new safety features appearing in upcoming hardware.

At CES, MSI introduced GPU Safeguard and GPU Safeguard+ on select power supplies. The feature monitors the 12V-2×6 connector for abnormal conditions. When triggered, the PSU can warn the user with an audible buzzer and, in some cases, force a shutdown if the situation is not addressed. If you don’t like using Afterburner, that’s probably more than enough to keep your card safe, but if you for some reason are not around the PC when this happens, you may lose some data.
MSI with a new feature that will change your GPU power limit
The upcoming Afterburner update adds a software layer called Power Guard, exposed through the GPU Safeguard+ option. Instead of relying only on a buzzer or shutdown, Afterburner can react to the alarm by applying a predefined emergency profile. This profile lowers GPU power limits, listed as 75 percent on NVIDIA GPUs, reducing load while keeping the system running.
In other words, it will not shut down the PC. It will lower GPU power to reduce load and help prevent overheating. The default limit may still be too high for some scenarios. Unwinder may add more options later.

This does not mean other users are left out. Afterburner already supports alarms when a temperature threshold is reached (shown above). That feature does not appear to apply a power limit automatically.
