Geekerwan machines custom IHS as a waterblock for Threadripper PRO 9995WX

Geekerwan has published a new build video on AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX, a 96-core Zen 5 workstation CPU rated for boost clocks up to 5.4 GHz. The project goal is simple: reduce the thermal bottleneck at the cold plate by turning the CPU’s integrated heat spreader into the cold plate itself, with coolant channels machined directly into the IHS.
The team started by validating the idea on older Ryzen Threadripper 1900X parts, buying used chips and machining channels into spare heat spreaders to compare against a conventional high-end block. They then iterated on water routing to better match chiplet layouts, since uneven flow can leave one CCD running hotter than the other when heat sources are spread across the package.

The final loop uses a four-port top cover (two inlets and two outlets) aligned so coolant enters above each CCD and exits at the sides. The channel pattern moved from straight runs to an S-shaped layout after simulation and trial builds suggested higher surface area and better heat transfer were possible at the project’s higher flow and pressure targets. The published parts list also includes an industrial chiller and a large reservoir, plus two 50W Bosch pumps from Mercedes.

On the results side, the channel reports an all-core overclock of 5.325 GHz and Cinebench R23 over 205,000 points, with Cinebench 2024 reaching 10,080 points and Cinebench 2026 at 41,478 points. During the Cinebench 2024 and 2026 runs, the CPU package power is shown around 1,340 W, with core temperatures generally in the 30°C to 50°C range, while the total system draw is reported around 1.7 kW.

This mod requires more than access to expensive machinery. It also carries a high risk of damaging the CPU afterward. Keep in mind this is AMD’s most expensive desktop processor on the market, so it is not something most people can attempt. Geekerwan also had support from ASUS. The company provided a removed IHS for planning and supplied parts for the test system, including a current-generation motherboard.
