Intel “Core X” HEDT Nova Lake-S rumor: 52-core full-power mode could push motherboard requirements higher

Intel’s new HEDT series reportedly on LGA-1954 socket

Power requirements will push motherboards manufacturers to innovate.

A recent update from leaker Jaykihn shifts the Nova Lake-S discussion away from specific turbo power numbers and toward platform and motherboard requirements. According to the leaker, a dual compute tile variant may have a power requirement high enough that it will only be supported by some motherboards.

Earlier, there was a “leak” showing PL1 and PL2 figures for Nova Lake-S. After checking, we learned these figures are not final. They are outdated, and Intel has yet to confirm the final numbers. Jaykihn also confirmed these were old figures for the 14+24 SKU.

We learned that the PL1 (Base Power) figure is 175 W, but this is confirmed for the dual-tile variant, which is important to keep in mind. Other SKUs will likely have lower PL1, but it’s not confirmed yet.

Core X: Dual-tile Nova Lake-S as a new HEDT segment

One potential misunderstanding is that dual-tile Nova Lake-S SKUs are not planned as successors to the Core Ultra 9 285K series. Instead, they appear to target a new segment that would sit within a new HEDT lineup. The name we heard is the Core X series , which would align with Intel’s older HEDT branding. That name is also used for Panther Lake’s top mobile chips. Intel has not made a final decision on naming, so it would be unwise to speculate too far. However, it would also make sense for Core X9 to appear on dual-tile variants as a mainstream HEDT option.

We also want to mention that there were also rumors about Intel dropping plans for a single-tile bLLC variant. This is not correct. Intel is expected to launch both single and dual bLLC variants. At the moment, Intel is planning two dual-compute-tile variants, which should land as an HEDT series, and two single-tile variants, which are expected to target the mainstream market, similar to Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 positioning.

Recent HEDT releases have mainly been tied to Threadripper and Xeon series, both targeting a niche enthusiast audience with high prices. If Intel shifts this segment to the consumer Z990 platform, Intel would likely price the Core X series at a premium, but it would not require a full platform change.

Of course, the naming is not confirmed yet. Intel could just as well use “X” for bLLC variants, which would also be logical. However, keeping the historical tiering, this approach would fit better.
