It’s been years since DirectX 12 has established itself in a PC gaming world, years since DX12 Ultimate was released. More recent updates include DirectStorage and Direct-ML updates, however these technologies are hardly used by game developer.

Meanwhile, the Game Developers Conference 2026 agenda includes “DirectX State of the Union 2026: DirectStorage and Beyond,” presented by Microsoft Xbox. The listing shows the talk on Wednesday, March 11, 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in Room 3001, West Hall at Moscone Center, with Shawn Hargreaves and Danny Chen as speakers.

The session introduction says it will cover DirectStorage updates, including planned Zstandard compression support and a Game Asset Conditioning Library , alongside broader DirectX items such as shader pre-compilation, ray tracing, ML integration, and tooling.

The description references linear algebra capabilities in HLSL and a path to running lightweight models in shaders for neural rendering on Windows.

On the NVIDIA side, “ Driving Innovation & RTX Advances with John Spitzer” is listed as a Luminaries Speaker Series session on Tuesday, March 10, 11:20 am to 12:00 pm at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Blue Shield of California Theater.
