An American tourist has died after being struck by lightning while hiking on Mount Etna in Sicily.

The 30-year-old, who has not been named by authorities, was on the active volcano on Sunday when a thunderstorm broke out, Italian media report.

The man is said to have been found by firefighters and emergency services in a state of cardiac arrest at about 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT) in a restricted area sometimes used to get closer to the summit.

Toronto police are investigating after what are believed to be human remains were discovered in a Scarborough neighbourhood late Sunday afternoon.

Officers were called to the Ellesmere Road and Markham Road area at approximately 5:50 p.m. for reports of a suspicious incident. When they arrived, police located remains that investigators say may be human.

Toronto police say the investigation is in its early stages, and no further details about the discovery have been released. Detectives have not yet determined whether the incident is criminal in nature.
