On Low-Cost Web Hosting/VPSes
As most web developers have over their careers, I've often spent time researching different low-priced web hosting companies in search of a better plan than the one(s) I'm currently using.

I've run servers and used shared hosting for myself and for clients I support with hosts like HostGator , Linode , DreamHost , SoftLayer , AWS , Digital Ocean , RamNode , and more. I've had a lot of experience running a
Boost Expire module being deprecated; how to switch to Cache Expiration

For Drupal 7, though, Boost was rewritten and substantially simplified. This was great in that it made Boost more stable, faster, and easier to configure
Quickly resetting a local MySQL database from the command line [Updated]
[ Update : And, as quickly as I finished writing this post, I thought to myself, "surely, this would be a good thing to have drush do out-of-the-box. And... it already does, making my work on this shell script null and void. I present to you: drush sql-drop ! Oh, well.]
When I'm creating or updating an installation profile/distribution for Drupal, I need to reinstall Drupal over and over again. Doing
The New Shiny
I recently read a very good interview with Jason Fried on The Great Discontent, and one of the answers towards the end of the interview struck me:
The other advice is to focus on one thing . I see a lot of entrepreneurs build something and then move onto the next thing and the next thing and the next. Building something is only step one. Itâs not that hard to put something out there. Building on top of that to maintain and improve it is actually the harder thing to do

Review: Anker Ultra Slim Mini Bluetooth 3.0 Wireless Keyboard
tl;dr : A great (and very inexpensive) alternative to an Apple-branded keyboard. You get what you pay for, and a little more.
Ever since Apple introduced its first 'chicklet-style' keyboards on laptops, I've been a fan. I love the feel of a loudly-clacking Apple Extended Keyboard II, but I can type much faster and more accurately on Apple's newer keyboards, like the $69 Apple Bluetooth Keyboard .

CNMC Boston - Website up, registration open
I don't know yet whether I'll be able to attend this year's Catholic New Media Celebration , which is being held on October 19, 2013 in Boston, MA. If I can't make it, it will be the first time since CNMC 2009 (San Antonio, TX â where I met this guy ) that I'm not in attendance (and the first time since 2010 that I haven't presented at the
A few of the best books I've read in a long time [Rinzler's Making of Star Wars]
I recently noticed the video below on the official Star Wars YouTube channel, and I immediately popped over to Amazon.com to put The Making of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi into my wish list (it's set for release on October 1, 2013!).
I've read both of J.W. Rinzler's other existing Making of Star Wars books ( Episode IV , Episode V ), and I thoroughly enjoyed both of them (read my review of The Making of
Stop letting .DS_Store slow you down
I have over 100 git repositories on my Mac, and for almost every one, I sometimes browse the directory structure in the Finder. Once I do that, I inevitably end up with a few pesky .DS_Store files that want to be added to my repo:

.DS_Store files don't add anything of value to my code (they just tell Mac OS X about folder display and icons), so I always end up adding them to my own projects' .gitignore files.
Feeling Better, and a Contest!
Hello everyone! I'm finally back from the hospital and on the mend. It turns out I had mono, and the combination of a couple immunosuppressants and the mono hit me pretty hard. It was interesting being in the ER, ICU and general hospital floors, and if I weren't wiped from a crazy-high 104.6°F fever in the ICU, I would've spent more time looking at all the awesome devices into which I was plugged!
Needless to say,
Moving Server Check.in functionality to Node.js increased per-server capacity by 100x
Just posted a new blog post to the Server Check.in blog: Moving functionality to Node.js increased per-server capacity by 100x . Here's a snippet from the post:
One feature that we just finished deploying is a small Node.js application that runs in tandem with Drupal to allow for an incredibly large number of servers and websites to be checked in a fraction of the time that we were checking them using only PHP, cron, and Drupal's Queue API.If you
