Following last month's release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, Canonical today released Ubuntu Core 26.

Ubuntu Core 26 as their minimal, immutable OS with up to 15 years of security maintenance for enterprises brings many upgrades to the platform. Ubuntu Core 26 features reduced installation times, 90% smaller over-the-air (OTA) updates, the latest in Snap packaging, live kernel patching, and security enhancements.

For further enhancing the security of the Linux kernel from Rust code, an Untrusted Data API has been in development for being able to explicitly mark data received from user-space or other external data. The latest Linux gaming handheld driver work by Derek Clark of Valve's Linux efforts is the OneXPlayer Configuration Driver that is now set to premiere in the upcoming Linux 7.2 kernel cycle.

This new OneXPlayer Configuration Driver "hid-oxp" was originally covered on Phoronix back in March but has now worked its way to a HID subsystem branch ahead of the Linux 7.2 merge window in June. Among the VFS patches queued into "-next" branches ahead of next month's Linux 7.2 merge window is the code for introducing the new OPENAT2_REGULAR flag for the openat2 system call.

Firefox 151 release binaries are now available as the latest monthly update to Mozilla's open-source web browser.

While there was talk of Firefox 151 shipping a native JPEG-XL image decoder, that feature was punted to Firefox 152 beta. But there are updates to its built-in VPN support, private browsing improvements, various settings changes, support for merging multiple PDFs directly within the Firefox PDF viewer, and a number of new developer APIs.
