Japanese authorities have sedated and captured a black bear, days after it was spotted roaming around a city near Tokyo.

A veterinarian fired a tranquiliser gun at the bear in Utsunomiya, home to half a million people, but missed the first shot. A second was fired about 15 minutes later, followed by a third.

Another "extremely intelligent" bear filmed chasing people in Fukushima is still evading officials, as Japan deals with a rise in bear encounters

Hundreds of aftershocks have jolted southern Philippines after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake left dozens of people dead and hundreds more injured.

The scale of devastation on Mindanao island is becoming clear as emergency responders reach coastal cities and towns. Officials fear the death toll, which currently stands at 37 dead and 487 injured, could rise.

Buildings have collapsed and roads are either cracked or buried in landslides. Large swathes of the island still have no electricity or telephone connectivity.

ICC suspends top prosecutor after investigating misconduct allegations

The International Criminal Court's (ICC) chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, has been suspended with immediate effect while an investigation into misconduct allegations continues.

The decision was made by a group within the ICC's management oversight body, which has also referred the matter to the court's 125 member states.

Crew members of the unladen tanker had sent distress messages saying the vessel was on fire and sinking.
