Iran war has cost US $37.5bn so far, Hegseth says, as Pentagon seeks billions more
Most Democrats are opposed to the supplemental funding request, and there is discontent in Republican ranks too.
Some of the fiscal hawks in the Republican Party want spending cuts elsewhere to offset the budget.
Either way, the House of Representatives leaves town on Thursday and the two chambers of Congress will not be jointly back in session until September.
Even if Republicans can muster the votes, it's going to be a couple of months before the Pentagon can get the funds.

Why WhatsApp usernames could upset Somalia's anti-terror fight
Somalia's government has told the BBC it is concerned about WhatsApp's plan to launch a new feature that would let people chat using usernames rather than phone numbers, saying it could pose a security risk.
Communications and Technology Minister Ahmed Osman Dirie said it could make it harder to trace and counter criminals in a country that is still battling Islamist militants.
The rollout to three billion global users of WhatsApp worldwide is expected in the coming months, allowing people to remove or change their usernames at any time.

Tokyo urges men to wear shorts to work, but some women say it's 'leg hair harassment'
As temperatures rise this summer, Japanese men are baring more leg at work than ever before.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is pushing company employees to ditch their usual suit and tie for more casual attire, featuring t-shirts, trainers - and shorts.
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike introduced "Tokyo Cool Biz" in April, hoping to expand on her signature cool down initiative which has now become a widely recognised annual summer tradition.
Almost four months in, the newly allowed shorts in the office policy is getting mixed reviews.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sacked the country's commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi.
His dismissal comes just days after the removal of popular Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov - a move that triggered street protests across the country.
Initial rumours that the end of Fedorov's tenure was related to a conflict between him and Syrskyi were soon confirmed.
Fedorov, 35, has been widely praised for energising the ministry and transforming the armed forces, as well as leading a drive against corruption.

Also on Tuesday, a huge fire broke out in the south-eastern Var department.

France has registered nearly 11,000 fires since the beginning of the year, with President Emmanuel Macron saying last week
Brazil's Amazon sees sharp decline in size of area burned in 2025
In 2024, the Amazon rainforest experienced its worst forest fires in over two decades, which the Copernicus Climate Change Service put down to "climate extremes and human activity".
"The 2025 figures are significant and show that it is possible to reduce the burned area in the country," Vera Arruda, a researcher at the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) and co-ordinator at MapBiomas, told the BBC.
"The 31% drop compared to the historical average - driven primarily

At least 12 Palestinians, including six members of one family, have been killed in three separate Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, according to local medics.
Video footage showed the family's apartment on fire overnight in the western al-Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City.
The brother of Firas al-Masri told the BBC that he had been burnt to death along with his wife, Salsabeel, and their three daughters and son, Faryal, Salma, Amira and Naim.

Why Iran is risking so much over the Strait of Hormuz
After 10 days of exchanging strikes with the US over control of the vital Strait of Hormuz waterway, Iran's leaders may appear to have three choices. None offer a clear route to victory.
The first is to accept much of what Washington wants: guarantee free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz by ending attacks on commercial shipping, give up or dilute Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium, and accept intrusive inspections by the global nuclear watchdog.
In return, Tehran would seek an end to the
Watch Texas police officer pull man from burning car

Shortly after directing the vehicle to the emergency lane, flames erupted from underneath it while the driver was still inside.
Newly-released footage shows the incident, which happened on 7 June.
Dozens hurt in Bologna protests after man dies while being restrained by police
Protests have taken place in Italy after the death of a Moroccan-born man while being forcibly restrained by two police officers in the northern city of Bologna.
Several thousand people took to the streets on Monday night demanding "justice for Abderrahim Fakir".
A smaller group then splintered off and clashed with police into the night. Prosecutors say 64 police were hurt in the unrest.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said it was imperative that the truth surrounding his death should be investigated but "nothing can justify violence against law enforcement"
