Chinese companies are expanding globally, and fast. Their biggest commercial competitors are in the US.
Waymo, Alphabet's robotaxi business, remains the commercial leader, operating paid driverless services in several US cities. Amazon-owned Zoox and Tesla are expanding more cautiously, while Uber has abandoned the development of its own autonomous vehicles, which had been marred by a fatal accident in 2018 .

A former Syrian intelligence chief in the city of Raqqa has been found guilty of torture and sexual abuse of opponents of the former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, at a court in Vienna, Austria.
A second Syrian official, the former police chief in Raqqa, was also found guilty of abusing political opponents.
The case in Vienna was a relatively rare example of a European country claiming jurisdiction for crimes committed by agents of Assad's government.

At least 25 killed in Sri Lanka prison riots
Riots at a prison in western Sri Lanka have killed 26 people, seven of them guards, and injured more than 100.
The two days of violence at Negombo Prison, in a coastal town north of Colombo, began with clashes between two groups of inmates.
Prisoners are alleged to have grabbed guards' guns on Sunday. Two people were killed that day, with dozens injured. Later, groups of male prisoners, and women from an adjoining unit, climbed on to prison rooftops demanding to be released.
