Toronto street festival organizers feeling financial strain as event costs continue to rise
As the city of Toronto gears up for another year of street festivals, organizers say rising costs are putting increasing pressure on festival budgets.
“We could always use more. It is really hard,” said Anah Shabbar, managing director of Do West Fest. “We are one of the biggest festivals, but we do have one of the smaller budgets.”
Shabbar says several services required to run the festival have become more expensive this year, with increased demand driven in part by preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup

Coast guard rescues sailor off Newfoundland attempting transatlantic record
ST. JOHN’S — The Canadian Coast Guard has rescued a sailor attempting to set a world record for the shortest boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
In a statement, the coast guard said it was advised on Friday morning that the sailor of a 1.2-metre vessel needed help.
The coast guard says the boat, called the Big C Atlantic Challenge, was about 120 kilometres east of Grates Cove, a small town at the tip of eastern Newfoundland’s Bay de Verde Peninsula.

Two elderly women were injured by an electrical hazard in North Riverdale on Saturday afternoon.
Toronto police said it received reports of downed utility wires near Danforth and Broadview Avenues at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Tree branches reportedly fell on the wires, which led to the two elderly women suffering non-life-threatening injuries.
Police, firefighters and paramedics are at the scene.
