WASHINGTON (AP) — Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said Monday that the risks being seen as political in the wake of a major voting rights decision.
She spoke after writing a solo dissent from the court’s decision allowing Louisiana to move quickly to use new maps after the a majority-Black district and weakened the Voting Rights Act.
“Public confidence is really all the judiciary has,” she said at a talk before the American Law Institute in Washington, D.C.

Man wanted in two separate sex assault investigations: Toronto police
Police are on the hunt for an unknown man who is wanted in connection with two separate sexual assault cases across Toronto.
According to investigators, the first assault was reported on May 15, near Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue. Detectives say the man approached a victim at 4:15 p.m. and sexually assaulted them.
Less than two hours later, police say the same man approached another victim in the area and sexually assaulted them as well.

Officials in Brampton have made the decision to close the city’s Chinguacousy Park on the last day of the long weekend.
In a social media post shared just before 8 p.m., Peel Regional Police said the park is closed on Victoria Day due to “large, unsafe gatherings and use of fireworks.”
“Effective immediately, park is closed,” police added. “All individuals in the park are to leave the area.”

A man has been arrested in connection with Toronto’s 9th homicide of 2026.
Authorities say 32-year-old Gordon Gauvin has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the deadly stabbing of Abdi Wali Aden.
Police were called to the area of Kipling Avenue and Albion Road in Etobicoke early Sunday morning and located Aden, 33, at the scene with stab wounds. He was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Two teenage gunmen opened fire at an Islamic Center in San Diego on Monday and killed three men before killing themselves a few blocks away, police said.
