EV sales jump in March as federal rebates return, though market share up slightly
OTTAWA — Sales of new electric vehicles jumped in March as Canadians took advantage of the long-awaited return of federal government subsidies.
Data released by Statistics Canada on Thursday shows 21,547 new EVs were purchased in March, the highest since December 2024 — just before the government paused the rebate program.
Ottawa brought back subsidies for new EVs on Feb. 16, after pausing them in January 2025 when money from the previous program ran out.

Toronto and southern Ontario are in for an early taste of summer for the next few days.
Environment and Climate Change Canada says the first hot spell of the season is expected to blanket the region with humidity and temperatures about 10 degrees above normal.

Canada has its first confirmed case of hantavirus.
The Public Health Agency of Canada says one of the four Canadians isolating in British Columbia who had been on a cruise ship where there was an outbreak has tested positive for the virus.
The national microbiology lab in Winnipeg confirmed the positive results on May 16 after the person, who is part of a couple from the Yukon who were isolating, developed “mild symptoms” on Thursday, including a fever and a headache.

The family of an Ontario man is taking part in a spring search in Mont-Tremblant this weekend, more than a year after he went missing on a ski trip in Quebec.
The spring search for Liam Toman started Saturday and continued Sunday, with volunteer teams and SARCAN K9, trained search-and-rescue dog units.

A Mississauga man is facing hundreds of charges following allegations of animal cruelty.
Police in Peel Region opened an investigation after being contacted by Animal Welfare Services regarding multiple incidents of kittens being sold in distressing conditions and later dying from their injuries shortly after being taken to their new homes.
On April 23, investigators executed a search warrant and rescued 57 kittens and eight adult cats, which were taken to an animal rescue centre to receive urgent veterinary care.

Man killed in early morning Etobicoke stabbing, suspect in custody
A man in his 30s is dead following an early morning stabbing in Etobicoke.
Toronto police were called to an apartment building on Kendleton Drive in the Kipling Avenue and Albion Road area around midnight.
Investigators found a man suffering from stab wounds. He was taken to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police say they have arrested a suspect at the scene. There was no immediate word on what charges they may be facing.
