US Coast Guard searches for man sailing from California to Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard on Friday asked mariners for help in finding a 60-year-old man sailing from California to Hawaii.

Noel Rubio left Long Beach on Dec. 28 on the 32-foot (9.7-meter) sailboat Malulani, the Coast Guard said in a news release. He planned to arrive in Kaneohe on the island of Oahu three weeks later.

He last made contact via cellphone on Dec. 28th south of Catalina Island


First cases of fatal chronic wasting disease found in B.C. deer

VICTORIA — Researchers say a deadly disease starts out slow but has the potential to devastate British Columbia’s deer population over time, after the discovery of the first cases in the province.

The concerns come after the B.C. government confirmed two cases of chronic wasting disease found in animals south of Cranbrook in the Kootenay region.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies on Friday approved in general terms a reform bill proposed by to deregulate the economy, overcoming a hurdle for the sweeping initiative after three days of heated debate.

But the fine print of the omnibus bill’s more than 300 articles, including economic, administrative, criminal and environmental changes, is still subject to negotiations in the lower house. The initiative must also be approved by the Senate.

Police investigate discovery of a body in Scarborough park

Police are investigating the discovery of a body at a Scarborough park.

First responders were called to Eglinton Ravine Park in the area of Eglinton Avenue East and Birchmount Road just after 4:30 p.m. Friday after someone walking their dog discovered the body in the ravine.

Police add it’s too early to say what the cause of death is at this point or how long the body has been there. They are treating it as a suspicious incident.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A federal lawsuit says a shouldn’t have been discharged from a Tennessee hospital, forced to leave despite her pleas for more help and unassisted by security guards and police during a medical emergency.

The son of 60-year-old Lisa Edwards on Thursday sued the city of Knoxville, a security company, individual officers and security guards, Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, its parent company and a physician group.

3 charged in separate assaults against parking enforcement officers

Three people are facing charges following three separate assaults against parking enforcement officers over a four-day period last month.

Police say the first two incidents occurred hours apart on Jan. 26.
