ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) — Congo captain Chancel Mbemba was subjected to a torrent of racist abuse on social media after leading his team to a 1-1 draw against Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.
Mbemba’s Instagram account was targeted by many users who replied to his latest posts with monkey or gorilla emojis, or wrote racist comments.
The 29-year-old Mbemba, who is Black, plays for top-tier French club Marseille.

Passenger restrained after attempting to open exit door on Air Canada flight from London to Toronto
A passenger had to be restrained following reports they tried to open one of the emergency doors while on a transatlantic flight from England.
CityNews was contacted by Emmanuel Pacheco, a passenger aboard the Air Canada flight that departed from London, England on Sunday afternoon, saying a fellow passenger was “acting strange” throughout the flight and then tried to open the emergency door while the plane was over the Atlantic.
“Pilot and staff not saying what happened to keep everyone calm,” Pacheco said in an email exchange with CityNews.
Former firefighter accused of planting explosives near California roadways pleads not guilty
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A former firefighter with a previous arson conviction has been arrested on suspicion of detonating a homemade bomb and planting severl other explosive devices along roadways across two Northern California counties, authorities said.
The 41-year-old man pleaded not guilty last week to multiple felony charges including possessing and exploding an explosive device with the “intent to injure, intimidate, and terrify a person, and to wrongfully injure and destroy property,” according to the criminal complaint.

Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the 1960s pop group the Shangri-Las, whose hits included “Leader of the Pack,” has died. She was 75.
Miriam Linna, founder of Weiss’ label, Norton Records, said Sunday that Weiss died Friday in Palm Springs, California. No cause of death was given. Rolling Stone first reported her death Friday.
