Canadian TV personality and children’s entertainer Nerene Virgin has died at age 77.
An online obituary says she died Monday in Burlington, Ont., not far from her hometown of Hamilton.
A fixture of TVO, then known as TVOntario, Virgin was best known for her role on the children’s series “Today’s Special,” which ran from 1981 to 1987. She portrayed Jodie, the affable display designer at the department store where the show was set.

Children found safe in Montreal after father’s vehicle stolen with them inside
MONTREAL — Two children ages three and 11 were found safe after their father’s vehicle was stolen with them inside in the Montréal-Nord borough on Thursday evening.
Montreal police spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant says the father left the car running with his children in the back seat while he went into a bank.
Brabant says the thief jumped into the man’s car and started driving, apparently without realizing there were children inside.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s mayor vetoed bills Friday aimed at in city jails and requiring more transparency in police encounters with civilians, setting up a faceoff with the City Council, which says it has enough votes to override him.

The U.S. Department of Defense plans to install two more groundwater treatment systems at a former Michigan military base to control contamination from so-called forever chemicals, U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin’s office announced Friday.
Environmentalists say the systems will help prevent PFAS from spreading into the Clarks Marsh area and the Au Sable River near the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda on the shores of Lake Huron. The base closed in 1993 as part of a base realignment.

Arrest made after teen stabbed at Humberside Collegiate Institute
A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after a male teenager was stabbed and injured during an altercation at Humberside Collegiate Institute.
Officers were called to the high school, located in the Quebec Avenue and Humberside Avenue area, just before noon on Friday.
Duty Insp. Peter Wehby said there were reports of an altercation, and a male teen was slashed with a knife or edged weapon. The victim was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. An age was not provided.
