RAMageddon 2026: How the AI Boom is Starving the Camera Markets

Here we are again with a report about global shortage and price increases on basic camera hardware that I think will affect the entire business :(

Major manufacturers (Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron) have pivoted their production capacity toward High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). Because AI data centers (driven by OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta) are willing to pay massive premiums for HBM, there is significantly less “standard” silicon left for consumer DDR5 RAM and NAND (SSD) storage.

While cameras don’t use the ultra-expensive HBM memory that is causing the PC shortage, they compete for the same Nand Flash (for storage) and Foundry Space (for sensors and processors).

So far, I haven’t received any information about possible delays in Sony’s (or other brands’) roadmap. But based on previous experience with supply bottlenecks, this usually affects the market. Therefore, I have a feeling that some camera announcements will be delayed. I hope that reliable sources will soon be able to tell me more about this “feeling” of mine.
