Totally wild Rumors about a new Sony “super thin” APS-C E-mount camera

I am 100% certain that Sony will unveil the new Sony A7rVI in May. I’m also keeping an eye on the rumors about the cameras Sony will announce after the A7rVI. But I wanted to share this extremely far-fetched rumor, which comes from an anonymous source. Of course, there’s a high probability that it’s fake news. Nevertheless, I decided to post it because I’m curious to hear from you whether such a model would actually make sense in the product lineup.

Basically, this source claims that Sony will launch a super-slim APS-C camera with an E-mount. It would be a very affordable camera in the same price range as the Sony A6100 (check prices here) . The focus is on the user experience rather than performance. The goal is to offer the younger generation a camera that is more affordable and compact than an expensive fixed-lens camera like the Ricoh GRVI. But with the flexibility to choose from nearly 600 E-mount lenses (here’s the full list at BH) .

The basic specs of the camera would be:

  • 24.2-megapixel Exmor CMOS image sensor (FSI) with 14 stops of dynamic range
  • BIONZ XR2 processor for a smaller mainboard and lower power consumption
  • Silent electronic front-curtain mechanical shutter
  • No IBIS, Dynamic Active Stabilisation only
  • 4K 30fps (no crop), 4K 60fps (1.56x crop, pixel-to-pixel, noisy IQ)
  • 10bit 4:2:2 XAVC HS / S / S Intra supported
  • 3.0-inch, 1.04M-dot touchscreen with improved response time
  • NP-FW50 battery

Like I said, I have low confidence in this rumor yet. But I am wondering if a super small, thin and affordable APS-C E-mount camera would find a market. A camera you can carry in your pocket all the time!
