Sony claims it is committed to APS-C, and that demand has increased

Sony told PetaPixel that: “ it remains very committed to APS-C, and that demand for APS-C products has steadily increased over the years.

Petapixel writes: The point is that, from the outside looking in, it can seem like Sony is really only focused on full-frame cameras, but the company told PetaPixel at CP+ 2026 that this is not the case. Yasufumi Machitani, General Manager, Camera Business Department, Sony Imaging Entertainment Business Unit believes that the APS-C market is growing, that they are analyzing the trend and discussing further development.

Sony told PetaPixel it does not see any difficulty marketing its APS-C products while also boasting the image quality and performance advantages of its full-frame products.

My take:

I think Sony is missing a ton of potential in the APS-C segment. In the past years we saw a resurgent interest from the younger generation but they cannot afford to spend a lot of money on cameras. So this is what I would love to get from Sony:

  1. A new $700 APS-C E-mount camera with the best autofocus and easy menu system for beginners
  2. A fashionable APS-C E-mount camera n the $1500 price range. Something that looks good, has an integrated viewfinder and again…looks classy!
  3. A Sony A7000, a mini Sony A1 for $2000.
