Sony ‘s new 247 Megapixel medium format sensor.

Last week Sony announced the development of the new Rialto 65 medium format Cine camera. I figured it’s a good time to share some of the wild medium format rumors I got in the past months :)

These are all form new or/and anonymous sources so there is a high potential this turns out not to be true. But for the sake of clickbait…sry discussion let me know what you think about this rumor:

The source said

“there has been discussions about an entirely new medium format line with a new lens mount and ultra-high MP sensor (100MP+), but it is a couple of years away. “

He also added some additional info:

Sony chose 54×36, cause mounting current FF E lenses will be like mounting an aps-c lens on a ff sensor, you will had a crop mode, in the case of the new mount it will give a 88mp crop mode for a FF E lens (or use a teleconverter to fill the whole sensor lol just kidding) sony is dead lock on 3:2 aspect ratio sensors, no 5:4 like fuji and others, in fact the size was chosen cause the wide of MF and length of FF would perfectly match, making lens compatibility between mounts as easy as aps-c and ff

Back to reality: No trustworthy source has yet told me that Sony has serious plans for medium format for classic hybrid photocameras. Sure they have patented some medium format cameras and lens designs, but that doesn’t mean they will actually do it!

Reminder:

Last year Sony released the full details for a new 247 Megapixel medium format sensor. This sensor is meant for “industrial use” so it’s not clear if this can be used on regular cameras too.

A couple of impressive specs:

• 3:2 ratio sensor with 53.96mm x 35.97mm size (that’s a medium format sensor used by 30k plus cameras like the Hasselblad H6D )
  
• 247MP Back-side illuminated sensor
• 5fps (which is quite fast considering size and resolution of the sensor.
• comes in both color or monochrome versions
