The Irony of the Office

From Seth Godin:

Factories used to be arranged in a straight line. That's because there was one steam engine, and it turned a shaft. All the machines were set up along the shaft, with a belt giving each of them power. The office needed to be right next to this building, so management could monitor what was going on.

Always Exciting: Weather in St. Louis

It's always exciting to be a St. Louisan in the springtime. God puts on a very nice show about two times a week; right now I'm staring outside the window at some of the most beautiful lightning strikes I've seen in a storm! I'm also thankful I'm not in the crazy rain.

How to: Batch Delete Photos on the iPad

Today my iPad told me it was out of space. Not believing that for a second, I remembered that I had taken about 9 GB worth of RAW photos last weekend, and dumped them all on the iPad. I thought they were deleted by Aperture after I imported them, but I guess they weren't.

Lacking any easy way of deleting photos through Aperture's Import interface, or through Image Capture [Edit: Image Capture does allow 'select all' or 'batch selection' of photos to delete

Lesser-Known new iOS 4 Features

iOS 4 Software Update

Besides a couple of the very helpful new features of iOS 4 like folders, multiple Exchange accounts, and unified inboxes, there are a few things I've been finding in my use of the new OS that are underrated, but very helpful improvements:

  • In the iPod app, you can now edit, delete, and create playlists.
  • If you plug the iPhone into a device which may cause interference, instead of giving you a vague popup asking you to put the iPhone into Airplane mode (which was almost always unnecessary

Mac OS X Mail App: Deleted Messages Showing in Inbox

Earlier today, when I was working on fixing a few little inconsistencies in my mail inboxes (I currently sync 5 different accounts (with a plethora of email addresses feeding into the various accounts)), deleted messages started showing in some of my inboxes in Mac OS X's built in Mail app. They were greyed out, but not enough so that I could easily distinguish non-deleted messages...

After looking around online for a while, and not finding any fixes for this problem (I get so

My First Computer (386 PC running MSDOS 6.0)

[ Update : I have posted an article about all the computers I've owned ].

Pictured below (in the final year of its existence) is the first computer I ever called my own. Built out of scrap parts my Dad brought home from his office, I managed to build the computer as a 33 Mhz 386, with 2 MB of RAM and a 20 MB hard drive, eventually upgrading it (in stages) to a 66 Mhz 486 with 8 MB of RAM

Google Switches from Windows to Mac/Linux for Security

From MacRumors :

Google is phasing out the use of Windows company-wide due to security concerns. The move comes after news in January that Google was hacked in an attack originating in China. Those attacks used a security vulnerability in Internet Explorer for Windows. News of the report comes from FT.com who cites several Google employees.

"We're not doing any more Windows. It is a security effort," said one Google employee.

The majority of those moving away from Windows PCs are moving to Mac OS

D3, Oh How I Shall Miss Thee

Canon PowerShot G11, Nikon D3, Nikon D90

Image taken with my fiancée's little P&S camera. Felt so sad compared to the luxurious slap-chang of the D90... even more so to the substantial thwap of the D3's 11 fps shutter!

Why I Love the D3...

I was simply running and gunning around my condo in very dim lighting this evening, and I am continually amazed at the sharpness, the clarity, and the beautiful colors that come out of the D3. Granted, pairing it with the amazing Nikon 50mm f/1.4 is much akin to pairing cream and a doughnut... but still:
