Liberals set to hold nomination for upcoming Toronto byelection

OTTAWA — The Liberals are planning to choose a candidate July 18 for an upcoming byelection in a Toronto-area riding that’s considered a safe bet for the governing party.

Longtime MP Nate Erskine-Smith resigned his seat in Beaches-East York this week.

The prime minister has not yet called a byelection for the riding — one of several expected in the coming months as a number of MPs from all major parties are set to leave Parliament.

Former cabinet minister Jonathan Wilkinson also resigned from the House of Commons

WASHINGTON (AP) — Crews are again draining the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as President Donald Trump’s problem-plagued efforts to revamp the waterway pushes well past his initial goal of having it ready by July 4 to mark the nation’s 250th birthday.

The president at first suggested his renovations would last a century. But, within weeks of the project originally reaching completion last month, the water was beset by an algae bloom and pieces of the new coating appeared to be peeling off the bottom.

Uyghur group asks Canada to go beyond ‘vague’ response to China ethnic-unity law

OTTAWA — A Uyghur rights activist says Ottawa’s reaction to a new Chinese law on ethnic unity is tepid and does not live up to Canada’s promise to tackle transnational repression.

Beijing has enacted a law giving a legal basis for the Chinese government to prosecute people or organizations outside China if their actions are deemed to harm the progress of “ethnic unity.”

China says the law promotes harmony among the country’s 55 ethnic groups, who make up just under nine per cent of the country’s
