ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV began a summer vacation on Sunday, capping a whirlwind finale to the first half of 2026, in which he emerged as a powerful global statesman on issues from artificial intelligence to war and flexed decisive papal muscle to govern internal church problems.
Leo is spending the rest of July at the papal retreat at Castel Gandolfo , the Vatican’s historic summer residence south of Rome that the American pope has turned into his weekly getaway for tennis and swimming.

A woman in her 30s was killed early Sunday morning in a hit-and-run collision in Mississauga, Peel Regional Police say.
Emergency crews were called to the area of Eglinton Avenue and Erin Mills Parkway just after 6 a.m. for reports that a pedestrian was hit by a car.
According to detectives, the victim was pronounced dead and the suspect vehicle fled eastbound on Eglinton Avenue.
The vehicle is described as a light-coloured sedan.

Pedestrian in critical condition after getting hit by car in Brampton
A man in his late 20s was rushed to a hospital early Sunday morning after getting hit by a car in Brampton.
Emergency crews were called to the Queen Street East area, near Cherrycrest Drive and Beaumaris Drive at approximately 12:45 a.m. for reports of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle.
Authorities say the man was transported to a trauma centre with critical injuries.
The vehicle and the driver remained at the scene, detectives added.
An investigation is ongoing.

Two people were rescued from a boat that crashed into the Toronto shoreline along Lake Ontario early Sunday morning.
The Toronto Police Service Marine Unit was called to the Humber Bay Park area just after 5 a.m. for reports of a boat that had crashed onto the rocks.
A man and woman were rescued from the boat and transported to a hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

A shooting outside of a Woodbridge hookah bar sent one person to a hospital early Sunday morning, authorities say.
Police were called to the area of Steeles Avenue West and Scholes Road at approximately 2:20 a.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they found one victim who was rushed to a hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Detectives say the suspect fled the area and that there is no threat to the public.

2 teen boys sent to hospital after Scarborough stabbing
Two teenage boys were sent to a hospital Saturday evening after a reported stabbing in Scarborough.
Officers were called to the area of Lawrence Avenue East and Birchmount Road at approximately 10:40 p.m. When they arrived on the scene, they found two boys with non-life-threatening injuries.
They were both transported to a hospital for treatment.
Detectives say one of the injured boys was arrested along with a second teenager.

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria said Sunday that two of its nationals were killed last month in South Africa following violent anti-immigrant protests targeting African workers in the country.
The Nigerians were killed June 28, two days before an unofficial deadline by protesters for foreigners to leave, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. One was allegedly killed by police officers and the other by unidentified attackers, it said.
