Teen charged in Clarington collision that injured six youths

A 17-year-old boy has been charged in a Clarington collision that injured six youths earlier this year.

Durham police were called to Longworth Avenue near Jackman Road just after 11 a.m. on April 15.

Police say a Volkswagen hatchback was travelling westbound when it collided with grey Ford SUV that was travelling eastbound.

Six teenagers were injured in the crash including four who were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries and two that were transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre.

Construction of special needs playground halted at Toronto school

Parents of children who attend a Toronto school for those with special needs reached out to Speakers Corner after construction on a playground they raised money to build was abruptly halted.

The project, which started last month at Sunny View Junior and Public school, was years in the making.

“The old playground was getting to the point where it didn’t always feel safe, and these kids really rely on a playground. It’s therapy,” said Anu Singh, a parent of a child attending the school.

Person injured, suspect in custody after stabbing in Bowmanville’s Rotary Park

A person has been taken to hospital after being stabbed in Rotary Park in Bowmanville.

Durham police said Monday there is a large police presence in the park following the stabbing and one suspect has been taken into custody.

The victim was transported to a trauma centre with serious injuries.

Police believe this is an isolated incident.

Snooker amateur champion from Brampton has a chance to turn pro later this year

Earlier this month, Brampton’s Nitin Sharma won the inaugural National Snooker League Main Event Title in Markham. The league just wrapped up it’s first season featuring the best amateur players in North America with Nitin capturing the final event of the season.

Nitin will head to Brazil later this year in an attempt to qualify for the World Snooker Tour needing to win the entire event to earn a 2-year tour card.

A strong aftershock rattles Venezuela as rescue workers race to find survivors

A strong aftershock jolted Venezuela early Monday following last week’s devastating back-to-back earthquakes, as civilians and emergency responders kept combing through the ruins of fallen buildings for survivors.

The aftershock, which struck about 27 kilometers (17 miles) north of Caraballeda on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast at 7:01 a.m. local time, measured 4.6 on the Richter scale, according to the United States Geological Survey. Colombia’s geological survey put the magnitude at 5.1

Woman struck by vehicle in the Port Lands

A woman has been rushed to hospital after being struck by a vehicle in the Port Lands early Monday morning.

Toronto police were called to Carlaw Avenue and Commissioners Street just after 6 a.m.

The pedestrian, believed to be in her 30s, was taken to hospital by trauma run with life-threatening injuries. The driver involved remained at the scene.

Road closures are possible in the area and drivers are asked to use alternate routes.
