Environment Canada issued a yellow-level warning for severe thunderstorms in Toronto and its surrounding areas on Monday.

Meteorologists with the national weather agency are tracking a severe thunderstorm which they say is capable of producing strong wind gusts, quarter-size hail and heavy rain.

A warning was issued just after 4 p.m. for Toronto, Pickering, Oshawa, Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham. It ended just before 5 p.m.

Environment Canada said local power outages are likely.

A pedestrian was rushed to a trauma centre after getting hit by a car in North York on Monday afternoon.

According to Toronto police, emergency crews were called to the area of Wilson Avenue and Clayson Road just after 3 p.m.

Paramedics say an adult male suffered serious, and potentially life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, and an investigation is ongoing.

Authorities are advising motorists to avoid the area.

Hamilton police have identified a man who died in hospital after he was stabbed and found on a sidewalk early Sunday.

Officers said they were called to Main Street West near Frid Street and Highway 403 at around 2:30 a.m., after a man was found with stab wounds by a taxi driver.

He was transported to hospital where he later died.

The victim has been identified as Zenin Roussel, 21, of Hamilton.

A police officer was shot during a traffic stop in Calgary on Monday morning and the suspect was later found dead following a chase through a popular city park.

Calgary police say the incident began when officers stopped a vehicle in the southwest neighbourhood of Spruce Cliff around 11:45 a.m.

During the stop, a man inside the vehicle allegedly fired shots and struck an officer. The suspect then ran from the vehicle into nearby Edworthy Park and toward the Bow River.

A New York jury has found a 46-year-old man guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his nine-year-old daughter from Montreal.

Luciano Frattolin was also convicted of concealing his daughter’s body.

Some family members in the court let out sobs and held onto each other as they heard the verdict.

Standing between his two attorneys, Frattolin kept a neutral expression, shaking his head slightly, before sitting down.

He was taken away in handcuffs minutes later.

The five people aiming to take over leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party will face off in their first debate on Monday evening.

Online voting for the new leader will begin Nov. 9 and end on Nov. 20 with the winner being chosen on Nov. 21.
