Federal bail bill becomes law as two other crime bills await passage
OTTAWA — Justice Minister Sean Fraser said Tuesday he hopes all three of the crime bills introduced by the Liberal government become law before Parliament rises for the summer.
Bail Bill C-14 received royal assent and became law on Monday, in what is likely the last sitting week of the spring session.
Fraser told reporters Monday the bill was “ designed to target some of the most frequent causes of concern we hear in our engagement with communities across Canada.”

An Aurora man is facing charges after Toronto Police allege he committed indecent acts at elementary schools in North York and Markham.

The complaint filed in Franklin, Tennessee, by the “Hard Fought Hallelujah” singer lists the reason for divorce as irreconcilable differences. The couple were married in Las Vegas in 2016. The filing lists the date of separation as May 9.

‘Lost Canadians’ told to surrender citizenship certificates are searching for answers
OTTAWA — Immigration Minister Lena Diab says having a Canadian ancestor does not guarantee someone is eligible for Canadian citizenship.
Diab was pushed in question period today to state how many people got their citizenship using inaccurate documents after an unknown number of people who received citizenship certificates under a new law received letters from the government over the weekend demanding they surrender them.
Under a law passed last year, people born before Dec. 15, 2025 can claim Canadian citizenship if they can prove they have a Canadian ancestor.

2 men charged with murder in connection with ‘gruesome’ Toronto homicide
Toronto police say two men have been charged with second-degree murder after a 32-year-old resident was allegedly assaulted and hit by a vehicle .
Officers said they were called to a building on Agate Road, near Keele Street and Wilson Avenue area, just after 6 a.m. on Sunday.
They said they received reports that a group of people were fighting in the area. At some point later, investigators said Erik Safar was found with critical injuries after being assaulted and struck by a vehicle.

Ontario, Region of Waterloo appealing court ruling that blocked encampment removal
The province and the Region of Waterloo announced the governments will appeal a recent decision on the Victoria Street encampment that prevented the clearing of people staying on the land.
