Manitoba Indigenous leaders demand federal government to act on Bill S-2

With Parliament set to rise in less than two weeks, First Nations leaders from across Manitoba gathered in Winnipeg to demand action on Bill S-2.

They say the legislation, known as the An Act to amend the Indian Act, would help end discriminatory status rules that continue to affect children, grandchildren and families today.

More than a year after Bill S-2 was introduced, First Nations leaders urged the Parliament to pass the legislation before the House rises for the summer.

Homeownership increased for recent immigrants in Canada and decreased for Canadian-born individuals: StatsCan

Homeownership rates for recent immigrants in Canada grew recently, but it also decreased for Canadian-born individuals, according to a Statistics Canada study released Tuesday.

Homeownership in Ontario among recent immigrants in their fifth year in Canada rose by from 35.7 per cent in 2018 to 40.2 per cent in 2021, recording an increase of over 12 per cent. While Canadian-born individuals saw a five per cent decrease in homeownership rates for the same period from 50.

Justice minister says he will review MAID committee testimony before making decision

OTTAWA — Justice Minister Sean Fraser says he will take time over the summer to review the work of a committee tasked with determining whether Canada is ready to allow people with mental illness access to medically assisted dying.

Committee co-chair Marcus Powlowski said last week the report would be presented to Parliament on Wednesday to ensure it’s in the government’s hands before the House of Commons takes its summer break.

Jacob Hoggard needs professional supervision, board said in denying full parole

The Parole Board of Canada rejected Jacob Hoggard’s bid for full parole this month because it found the former Hedley frontman, now a convicted sexual offender, requires professional supervision.

Federal bail bill becomes law as two other crime bills await passage

OTTAWA — Justice Minister Sean Fraser said Tuesday he hopes all three of the crime bills introduced by the Liberal government become law before Parliament rises for the summer.

Bail Bill C-14 received royal assent and became law on Monday, in what is likely the last sitting week of the spring session.

An Aurora man is facing charges after Toronto Police allege he committed indecent acts at elementary schools in North York and Markham.

The first incident was reported on Wednesday, May 27, at a school in the Jane Street and Finch West Avenue area.

MPs urge action to undercut ‘manosphere’ by tackling anti-women ideology

Jelly Roll files for divorce after 10-year marriage, citing irreconcilable differences

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Country music star Jelly Roll has filed for divorce from his wife of 10 years, according to court filings.
