Vaughan massage therapist charged with sexual assault: police

York Regional Police (YRP) have charged a registered massage therapist after a woman reported being sexually assaulted during an appointment at a Vaughan wellness clinic earlier this month.

Investigators say the incident happened on May 9 at a clinic in the area of Rutherford Road and Vellore Woods Boulevard. According to police, the victim attended a scheduled massage when, during the appointment, the therapist allegedly touched her for a sexual purpose.

The suspect was arrested two days later, on May 11, and has been charged with sexual assault.


India’s commerce minister says Carney’s recent visit helped reset relations

OTTAWA — India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal says Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent visit to his country paved the way for a complete overhaul of the Canada-India relationship.

Goyal is in Canada for meetings on trade and investment this week and met Monday morning with International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu.

Goyal said before the meeting the relationship between Canada and India will be very important in the coming years. He said both countries are keen to reach a free-trade agreement in 2026.

Grave of Canadian soldier from First World War identified in cemetery in France

OTTAWA — The Department of National Defence says it has confirmed that a previously unidentified grave in France for a Canadian First World War soldier belongs to Sgt. Norman McLennan.

The headstone at the Courcelette British Cemetery in northern France, which says only that the plot was for a sergeant of the “Great War Royal” Canadian regiment, will now be rededicated to McLennan in a ceremony.

Ottawa braces for 2026 wildfire season by leasing 10 new firefighting aircraft

OTTAWA — The federal government is leasing 10 new firefighting planes and helicopters to help provinces and territories respond to wildfires this summer.

Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski says provincial and territorial wildfire agencies will be able to request the use of four air tankers, one spotter plane and five heavy lift helicopters to fight wildfires.

In a news release, the government says the new assets will boost national firefighting surge capacity by increasing provincial and territorial access to aircraft during periods of intense wildfire activity.
