The Ontario Liberals have rejected an appeal by MP Nate Erskine-Smith of a nomination contest loss earlier this month that’s put his bid for leadership of the provincial party into question.

Erskine-Smith was vying to represent the provincial party in the upcoming Scarborough Southwest byelection but lost a nomination race on May 9 to business owner Ahsanul Hafiz by 19 votes.

RICHMOND — Three activists whose Gaza-bound aid flotilla was intercepted in international waters by Israeli forces have returned home to Vancouver, with one of them saying they went through four days of continuous beatings and torture.

Tenants protest ‘extreme rent increases’ and ‘ignored maintenance requests’

A group of Etobicoke tenants living in several buildings on Richview Road rallied Sunday against what they call steep rent hikes and long-ignored maintenance issues.

Tenants say they recently received what’s known as an AGI, or Above Guideline Increase, which would raise rent beyond Ontario’s rent control limit of 2.1 per cent. Organizers with the Toronto Tenant Union say the landlord is seeking more than double the provincial guideline while repairs inside the buildings continue to pile up.

Bystander in serious condition after fatal shooting near White House checkpoint

A bystander who was struck by gunfire after a man fired on a checkpoint and was fatally shot by U.S. Secret Service officers remained in serious but stable condition Sunday.
