Scarborough home damaged by gunfire, police say

Toronto police are investigating after a home in Scarborough was damaged by gunfire early Thursday morning.

Officers were called to the area of Scarborough Golf Club Road and Greenock Avenue just before 3 a.m. for reports of a shooting.

Detectives say evidence of gunfire was located at the scene and a home was damaged. No injuries were reported.

Authorities say an investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

WHO to brief on hantavirus cruise ship outbreak as global concern grows

DVP scheduled for full weekend closure May 8-11

The Don Valley Parkway is scheduled for a full weekend closure from 11 p.m. on Friday, May 8, until 5 a.m. on Monday, May 11.

The parkway will be shut down from Highway 401 to the Jarvis Street ramp on the Gardiner Expressway.

The City of Toronto says the planned closures are in an effort to maintain expressway infrastructure and prepare for major upcoming events like the FIFA World Cup next month.

BCE reports first-quarter profit down from year ago, revenue up

BCE Inc. reported its first-quarter profit fell compared with a year ago as its revenue rose.

The company said its profit attributable to common shareholders totalled $616 million or 66 cents per diluted share for the quarter ended March 31.

The result compared with a profit of $630 million or 68 cents per diluted share for the first quarter of 2025.

Man, 68, rushed to hospital after Vaughan house fire

A 68-year-old man was rushed to a hospital late Wednesday evening following a residential fire in Vaughan.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Ellerby Square North and Kipling Avenue just after 10:45 p.m. to battle the blaze.

Police say the home was evacuated, but the cause of the fire was not immediately known.

One resident remains in hospital. His condition is currently unknown.

An investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal is ongoing.


Nigerian army says it rescued some children abducted from an orphanage last month

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Seven children and two women abducted by gunmen at an orphanage last month in the north-central region of have been rescued by troops, the country’s army said on Wednesday.

Authorities in Kogi state said that was operating illegally and abducted 23 pupils in an “isolated area” of Lokoja, capital of Kogi State, on April 26. Fifteen of those abducted were immediately rescued.
