Conservatives propose parental leave EI reforms

OTTAWA — The federal Conservatives proposed a trio of employment insurance reforms on Thursday, which they argue would make parental leaves more flexible for modern families.

Conservative employment critic Garnett Genuis held a press conference in Ottawa, alongside three of his caucus colleagues who are young mothers, to unveil the proposals.

“New technology and emerging trends in work have created new opportunities for parents to balance work and family life, while the worsening affordability crisis has also put new burdens on families,” Genuis said in the National Press Theatre.

BMO Field in Toronto to host NCAA football game in the 2027 season

For the first time ever, a NCAA college football game will be played at Toronto’s BMO Field.

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced Thursday that BMO Field will host a game between Syracuse University and Wake Forest University next summer.

The game is scheduled to take place during Week 0 of the 2027 college football season and will likely be played on either August 28 or 29. It will coincide with the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE).

Peel Regional Police are urging the public to come forward with information after a 40‑year‑old Brampton man was arrested in connection with an indecent act involving a child at a local recreation facility.

The incident occurred on April 26 around 3:15 p.m., when a child was using a change room at a recreation centre in the area of Dixie Road and Balmoral Drive.

Privacy watchdog finds thousands of tax account breaches, urges stronger protections

OTTAWA — The federal privacy watchdog says there have been more than 42,000 breaches at the Canada Revenue Agency since 2020 as a result of people gaining unauthorized access to, or modifying, taxpayer information.

In a special report tabled in Parliament, privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne points to gaps in the revenue agency’s prevention, monitoring, detection and handling of breaches.

Dufresne found the agency couldn’t provide details of every confirmed breach due to limitations in its tracking systems and the overall volume


2 additional men charged in deadly Woodbine Mall shooting

Authorities have arrested two more men in connection with the deadly shooting of 37-year-old Chandan Jumar Raja Nandakumar outside Woodbine Mall earlier this year.

In an update shared Thursday, Toronto police said it had arrested 18-year-old Xzavier Blake of Toronto and 18-year-old Dyson Taylor of Brantford.

Blake was charged with first-degree murder and Taylor was charged with accessory after the fact.

Quebec television personality calls for tougher legislation on identify theft

QUÉBEC — A Quebec television personality is calling for tougher laws against online fraudsters and identity thieves after she and other public figures were victimized.

Marie-Claude Barrette told a legislature committee in Quebec City that some victims have even taken their own lives.

She testified Wednesday at the start of consultations on a bill aimed at protecting consumers against the misleading or fraudulent use of a person’s identity or image.

Ottawa says Louise Arbour to be installed as governor general on June 8

OTTAWA — Louise Arbour will be sworn in as Canada’s next governor general on June 8, the Canadian Heritage Department confirmed.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Tuesday the retired Supreme Court justice will replace Mary Simon, who became Canada’s first Indigenous viceregal in 2021.

Arbour, an accomplished former jurist, is fluently bilingual, and has also previously served as UN human rights commissioner and chief prosecutor at The Hague.
