Planned defence bank to be headquartered in Canada: report
OTTAWA — Canada has been selected to host a multinational bank to provide financing for defence projects by NATO members and allies.
The Globe and Mail newspaper first reported the decision following the end of multinational negotiations earlier today which were hosted in Montreal.
A source with direct knowledge confirmed the decision for The Canadian Press but added that there’s still a lot to discuss and sort through — and cautioned there’s still a world in which it doesn’t happen.

Clouds of tiny flying black insects, known as midges, are causing frustration around Toronto’s waterways.
A video captured by Pat O’Rourke shows him covered head to toe in midges as he biked over the bridge by Roncesvalles and Queensway.
“There’s just swarms of midges everywhere … you kinda get used to them, though. They are harmless, but it can be annoying, so just keep your mouth closed if you’re biking or running or something like that,” shared O’Rourke.

Hamilton restaurant tied to salmonella outbreak allowed to reopen after re-inspection
HAMILTON — Public health officials say a Hamilton restaurant linked to a salmonella outbreak has been allowed to reopen after passing a re-inspection of food safety standards with no new illnesses reported.
Hamilton Public Health says there were 29 confirmed cases of salmonella linked to the Piper Arms Stoney Creek restaurant, with 57 probable cases and nine hospitalizations.
The restaurant was ordered to shut down temporarily on April 13 while the health agency investigated the outbreak.

OTTAWA — Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said Wednesday it’s her “understanding” that Iranian soccer officials saw their permission to enter Canada revoked ahead of the FIFA Congress in Vancouver.
“It’s not my personal lead, but my understanding is that there is a revocation of the permission. It was unintentional, but I’ll leave it to the minister to indicate,” Anand said when asked about the situation on her way into question period.

Transponders to be installed on New York area airport ground vehicles following deadly collision
Transponders that might have helped pinpoint the location of a fire truck that collided with a landing Air Canada jet in New York will soon be installed on ground vehicles at the region’s three major airports.
The trackers will be put on fire trucks and other rescue vehicles, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Tuesday. The transponders can provide air traffic controllers with more precise information about the vehicles and their locations by constantly sending signals to the control tower.

MONTREAL — The federal government says it will outsource the air passenger complaints process to a third party in a bid to clear the massive backlog at the country’s transport regulator.
In Ottawa’s spring economic update Tuesday, the Liberals said they plan to import a model used in Europe that sees independent adjudicators resolve complaints over issues ranging from refunds to accessibility.

Ontario autism advocates are calling for greater staffing and funding for special education in the province in order to address what they say is a lack of adequate in-class supports to allow their kids to fully participate and be safe.
The Ontario Autism Coalition circulated a survey about the education system within the special needs community and found a rising percentage of parents saying schools put their kids on a “modified schedule,” allowed to attend less than full time.
