Police look to identify suspect in Vaughan synagogue assault
Police in York Region are looking to identify a suspect following a weekend assault at a Vaughan synagogue.
Investigators say just after 9:30 a.m. on April 25, a man attempted to enter the Vaughan Sephardic Kehila Centre at 7026 Bathurst Street, and when he was denied, he attempted to force his way inside.
“The suspect threw a stack of papers at security personnel, who prevented him from entering,” police said in an updated release on Wednesday.

Carney says clean electricity strategy promised weeks ago is still on its way
OTTAWA — The federal government still has not announced its clean electricity strategy, despite Prime Minister Mark Carney saying it would land weeks ago.
At a news conference in Halifax on March 26, Carney told reporters the government would be releasing “next week” a strategy to expand the electricity grid through hydro, nuclear and renewable energy.
In the spring economic update Tuesday, the government said it was planning to release a “discussion paper” to seek input from provinces and territories on how to modernize the grid.

Conservative MP Jamil Jivani returns to Washington to meet with U.S. trade rep
OTTAWA — Conservative MP Jamil Jivani is back in Washington today for a meeting with Canadian business interests and United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
The Canadian Embassy confirms it will have a representative in attendance.
During a previous trip to the U.S. capital earlier in the year, Jivani met his longtime friend Vice-President JD Vance and stopped by the White House, where he said he met briefly with President Donald Trump.

Federal government earmarks $145M for World Cup security
OTTAWA — The federal government is allocating up to $145 million for security during the upcoming World Cup.
Canada is co-hosting with the United States and Mexico, and thirteen matches are scheduled to take place in Toronto and Vancouver this June and July.
The government says in a press release the funding is in response to “specific operational needs identified by the host provinces and cities.”
It says the funding will reduce financial pressure on the cities and provinces and ensure public safety agencies have the necessary resources.

Toronto cop accused in ‘Project South’ corruption probe to stay behind bars after review
A Toronto police constable accused of leaking information to criminals in a wide-reaching corruption case will stay behind bars after a bail review in Ontario’s Superior Court.
Const. Timothy Barnhardt is one of eight active and retired Toronto police officers charged in Project South, an organized crime and corruption investigation led by York Regional Police.
Investigators have said the probe uncovered allegations of bribery, conspiracy to commit murder and drug trafficking, among other offences.
