Apple acquires virtual reality startup NextVR, but what's the plan?

What just happened? Apple has long been rumored to be working on VR or AR in some form. The acquisition of NextVR seems to confirm Apple's ambitions to enter the space. NextVR's patents, in particular, may help the Cupertino giant bolster its content offerings with Apple TV+.

Google's Chrome will start blocking resource-intensive ads in August

Bottom line: Heavy ads can reduce system performance and have a negative impact on both battery life and bandwidth allowances. Offending ads can include those that are actively malicious, like cryptocurrency miners, as well as genuine advertisements that are simply poorly coded or may have bugs.

Google is doing more to combat resource-intensive ads that can dampen the overall user experience.

The search giant said it is experimenting with setting limits on the resources an ad may use; should it exceed a specific threshold, the ad will be unloaded and

Apple reportedly wants to build an Audible-like experience for news

In brief: Apple's News+ service may be getting a new format for news, where you'll be able to listen in much the same way you can listen to your favorite books on Audible. Whether or not that will become a reality depends on how much Apple is willing to compromise on its original plan to appeal to publishers.

Microsoft is phasing out 32-bit versions of Windows 10

The big picture: Microsoft is taking the first step in what is likely to be a tedious process to make Windows 10 a 64-bit only product. In the grand scheme of things, this is really just a formality as all of the major desktop CPU makers stopped producing 32-bit processors long ago.

Google denies its diversity programs are shuttering to appease conservatives

A hot potato: Google has denied a report that claims it rolled back its diversity and inclusion initiatives to appear less anti-conservative. Several Google employees and people who recently left the company made the claims, adding that the team responsible for the programs has been reduced in size.

Yesterday, NBC reported that a number of Google workers, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said they believed the reason the company was cutting its diversity programs was to protect it from criticism from conservatives.

Google did confirm that one popular diversity
