New Thunderbolt flaw lets hackers bypass security features in five minutes

In brief: If your laptop somehow makes its way into hackers’ hands, will the login screen and hard disk encryption keep its contents safe? You might imagine so, but if it’s got a Thunderbolt port, you could be in trouble.

Boasting 40Gbps transfer speeds, as well as the ability to power devices and connect to 4K peripherals, Intel’s Thunderbolt interface works by offering more direct access to a computer’s memory compared to other ports.

One drawback with Thunderbolt 3 is its

Intel won't benchmark GPUs with more than 768 shaders and 3GB memory

Flashback: Intel was poised to be bravo six, going dark . Their covert GPU development program was confirmed. It took one burst for them to capture nearly a dozen industry specialists from other companies. They hunkered down. They went radio silent for a year. Then, they hired a marketing team.

That marketing team flipped the paradigm and introduced an unprecedented level of transparency into the development process. (I’m personally grateful to Intel’s marketing team for giving me so much to write about.) Their ploy

AMD has developed an 8-core desktop APU

A month ago, AMD released a smattering of mobile pieces to immediate success. Now they’re prototyping the same hardware in desktop form: Renoir, fully unlocked and power hungry.

Renoir is AMD’s newest product. It is a monolithic APU; it pairs eight Zen 2 cores with eight Vega compute units (equivalent to 512 shaders) on one die. Subsequently, it’s a little pricier than other recent Ryzen releases, but it’s also very efficient which has made it an excellent choice

Is Virtual Reality Missing Its Moment?

Many believed VR would take video games to the next level. But even with better games and more impressive hardware, the sobering realization is that VR remains far from widespread adoption. Facebook may have had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to capitalize on an unfortunate circumstance. Perhaps the situation hit us, but...

Apple plans to reopen a handful of its brick-and-mortar stores next week

In context: The Covid-19 pandemic has had a nasty effect on the world's economy so far, with many non-essential businesses temporarily closing up shop to keep their employees (as well as the public) safe. However, for obvious reasons, those companies are eagerly waiting for the day that they can reopen their physical locations.

For tech giant Apple, that day will be coming relatively soon. After about two months of locking down its brick-and-mortar stores (they closed in March

Amazon and Microsoft are accusing each other of playing dirty to get JEDI contract

A hot potato: With Amazon and Microsoft battling in strong words over the juicy $10 billion JEDI cloud contract, it looks like it'll be a while before the project can actually begin. You could say that the true loser in this story is the United States Department of Defense, who is stuck between two companies arguing price over "technical superiority."

Last month, the DoD cleared Microsoft's JEDI contract award, after it couldn't find any wrongdoing in the whole process. This was the

Most Google employees will work from home until 2021, CEO says

Why it matters: After several months of dealing with the Covid-19 crisis, Google has made the unsurprising decision to extend its current employee work-from-home policy. Moving forward, the search behemoth's employees will be working remotely through the remainder of 2020. This announcement came from Google CEO Sundar

Facebook's new look begins rolling out for all desktop users

What just happened? Facebook has changed multiple times over the years, but lately, the website has been experimenting with one of its biggest overhauls to date. After months of adjustments, testing, and feedback from users, the overhaul is finally rolling out for everyone, with the goal of streamlining the Facebook experience.
