New Canon software lets you use your digital camera as a high-resolution webcam solution

Bottom line: I probably wouldn't go out and buy a high-end Canon camera just for use with video conferencing, but if you already have a quality camera for your photography or video recording needs, there's no reason not to add it to your video conferencing setup.

With millions of people now working from home and conducting video calls from their computer or mobile devices, the quality of these calls is suddenly more important than it once was. A quick check of Logitech’s website reveals that all

Lyft lays off 17 percent of its workforce, institutes pay cuts for remaining employees

In context: Ride-sharing companies have taken quite a big hit to revenue in recent months. Some, like Uber, have been able to weather the storm somewhat by offering services like food and grocery delivery. Others, like Lyft, haven't been quite as adaptable, and are now suffering the consequences.

According to a new CNBC report, Lyft is laying off 17 percent of its workforce due to the Covid-19-pandemic, which amounts to 982 employees. An additional 28

DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 readies 16K display support for USB4

In a nutshell: Nearly a year after first introducing DisplayPort 2.0 with Alt Mode (remapping pins for USB-C), VESA has updated the tech for use with USB4. Although it does not expect devices to start implementing until 2021, the new spec ensures USB4 connections will benefit from the increased performance that DisplayPort 2.0 offers.

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) introduced an upgraded DisplayPort 2.0 spec last year with an alternative mode for USB-C. At

Samsung reports Q1 revenues of $45.5 billion, up 5.6 percent YoY thanks to high demand for its memory chips

Bottom line: Samsung is one of the companies that so far weathered the storm, mostly thanks to its diversified business and strong demand for its silicon across the entire hardware industry. The company is bolstering its online retail channels to cope with waning demand for consumer electronics.

Samsung posted revenues of 55.3 trillion won ($45.5 billion) for the three months ending in March, which is a positive result despite being a modest 5.6 percent year-over-year increase.

Google adds AirPods-like features to Bluetooth on Android

Why it matters: Apple fans have long enjoyed the seamless integration within Apple's ecosystem of devices. Google is trying to emulate that for headphones by adding new Bluetooth features for Android. These features should make it much easier to pair and use Bluetooth headphones with Android devices.

Google's second generation Pixel Buds have started shipping, about six months after they were first announced . These truly wireless earbuds have generally been reviewed well and even use a similar pairing process as AirPods called Fast Pair. However, Google is looking

Toshiba reveals which of its hard drives use slower SMR technology

Bottom line: Toshiba does note that SMR tech has been recognized to have an impact on write speeds, especially in environments where continuous random writing takes place. As such, “Toshiba products are carefully tailored to specific workloads and use cases.”

Western Digital last week came clean with regard to which recording technologies its drives use after reports surfaced that it and other vendors were utilizing slower tech in some drives to keep manufacturing costs down without explicitly stating as much.

Now in an effort to be more transparent, Toshiba has shared

AMC will no longer show Universal movies due to on-demand spat

Editor's take: As the CEO, it’s Aron's job to advocate for his company. I get that. But this approach just feels like the wrong way to go about it. AMC took a similar, confrontational stance with movie subscription services a few years back but then ultimately launched its own take on the membership program. This time around, at least from my perspective, they are in no position to be firing bullets but rather, should be collecting health kits. The Coronavirus has exposed the

Games industry thanks UK health care workers with a selection of 85,000 free games

Why it matters: If two industries have kept busy during the lockdown, it would have to be the video game and health sectors. Games have helped people cope with cabin fever, and health pros have helped them deal with the more grave Covid-fever. It seems fitting for the game industry to band together to thank these workers who put their lives and health at risk for us all.

On Wednesday, the Association for UK Interactive Entertainment (Ukie) launched the Games for Carers initiative. The program will give away

Spotify on shifting listening behavior: "Every day now looks like the weekend"

The big picture: A recent survey of US consumers found that two in five said they are now listening to music more than before to help manage stress which the company said helps explain the increase in searches for terms like “chill” and “instrumental.” Similarly, they’ve also seen a spike in the consumption of podcasts related to meditation and wellness in recent weeks.

Netflix isn’t the only entertainment giant observing changing consumer behavior as a result of Covid-19. Spotify in its letter to shareholders

Google parent Alphabet beats earning estimates for Q1 2020

Bottom line: As more people bunkered down into their homes, Google saw an increase in web traffic to its many online services, but expected a significant slowdown in ad revenues. While the advertising business has indeed taken a hit, it's not nearly as bad as it could have been thanks to some clever cost-cutting on marketing and hiring.

Google's parent company reported revenues of $41.2 billion for the first quarter of 2020, which is a 14 percent year-
