Why You Can't Work at Work
I worked from home one day. That day I accomplished about 3x as many tasks as a normal day at the office. Why is this? This post offers a pretty good summary: Why You Can't Work at Work .
Should Pope Benedict XVI Resign?
...this is a question posed by KMOX Radio's Mark Reardon, who hosted an hour of some of the most confusing arguments for the Pope's resignation I've ever heard.
His basic principle was this: Accepting the facts of the New York Times' recent article bashing the Pope, should the Pope resign, as would any other head of an organization accused with being an accessory to a crime?
Unfortunately for Mark, most Catholics do not (and likely will not ever) accept the Times
Nice! (Two Cameras and a Killer Lens Combo)
The kit I'll be wearing at the Deaconate Ordination Mass this coming Saturday. Afterwards, I'll run to the back chapel, where I'll snap some shots with the D3 and a nice kit of SB-26 remote flashes!

Is anyone selling a used D3 for cheap? I gotta get me one of these cameras!
Gear pictured above:
- Nikon D3 (rented from LensRentals)
- Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF (my own)

Gzip/mod_deflate not Working? Check your Proxy Server
Recently, I was troubleshooting performance issues on a few different websites, and was stymied by the fact that YSlow repeatedly reported an F for "Compress components with gzip," even though online sites like GIDNetwork's Gzip test were reporting successful Gzipping of text components on the site.

Yslow results - not very happy.
After scratching my head for a while, I finally figured out the problem, hinted at by a comment on a question on Stack Overflow . Our work's proxy server was blocking the 'Accept-
Dropbox: File Syncing for Everything!
I just upgraded my Dropbox account [ referral-free link ] from 2 GB to 50 GB; I started using the file synchronization service about a year ago, and since the day I started using it, it's been one of the best pieces of software and Internet services I've ever used.

Neat little upgrade graphic!
There has been zero downtime, their software works flawlessly through proxies, through firewalls, through SOCKS5, etc. (and, of course, through an unprotected connection),
Updated Front Page Images...
After a few months without seeing an update, I finally took the time to process a few more photos for the front page of Lifeisaprayer.com - you can visit the front page and take a look for yourself. You can always click on one of the images to see them all for yourself, in a timeline of sorts.
October 2, 2010

...of course, our rings won't be gold, nor will they be intertwined in some crazy manner which prevents either of us from ever putting them on. But they'll be on our fingers on October 2nd!
Please pray for me and for my fiancée as we progress on the journey toward married life and communal love! Expect a few more posts about Marriage/Weddings, and about love in general, between now and then.
Volleyball/Webmaster Status Codes
Some of the crazy thoughts that go through my head... yesterday I was watching some of the other teams play at De Smet (where I'll be coaching the freshmen volleyball team this year), and I thought of a relevant comparison between HTTP/1.1 status codes and volleyball plays.
- 101 Switching Protocols - A play's not working? Move a couple guys around.
- 200 OK - Good job. We got the point.
- 300 Multiple Choices - The setter
The "Occasional CMS User" Myth - or... People Don't Like Updating Their Own Content
Relevant Article: The Myth of the Occasional CMS User
Often, one of the big justifications for a CMS is removing the webmaster bottleneck and delegating content entry to the people who have the information. The implicit assumption is that everyone wants to directly maintain their portion of the website but technology is standing in the way. But if you visit a CMS customer a while after implementation you are likely to find that the responsibility of adding content is still concentrated in a relatively small proportion of the employee population.
Unfortunately, this is almost
Allowing Organic Groups Administrators the Ability to Unpublish/Publish and Schedule Content
One requirement of the Archdiocese of St. Louis' website is that group administrators are able to publish and unpublish the content inside their groups, and they should also be able to schedule posts for automated publishing and unpublishing at a later time.
To do this, I used the following modules:
- OG User Roles
- Scheduler
- Publish Content
- [EDIT: I'm now using the Override Node Options module rather than Publish Content - it gives more fine-grained control over visibility of node form options.]
After enabling these modules,
