A 38-year-old paddleboarder is dead after apparently being overcome by strong winds and heavy rain on Lake Simcoe on Canada Day.

South Simcoe Police say they received a report just after 5 p.m. of a man in distress on the lake near the town of Innisfil.

Russian attack on Ukraine shakes Kyiv for hours

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine’s capital with missiles and drones overnight into Thursday with the intense strikes causing loud explosions and shaking Kyiv for hours.

Some ransom notes sent in Nancy Guthrie case still being investigated as legitimate, FBI says

The FBI has discounted some of the ransom notes that surfaced after the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie as nothing more than extortion attempts, but the agency said Wednesday it’s still evaluating others that might be legitimate.

The FBI did not specify how many ransom notes have been received, other than saying “several.”

“This case continues to be investigated as a kidnapping for ransom case,” the FBI said in the statement.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is also investigating the case. The department declined to comment

Israeli forces detain Palestinian women in West Bank raids

JERUSALEM (AP) — It was shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday when Abdelrahman Badr said he heard footsteps outside his home in Hebron in the occupied West Bank. Soon Israeli forces were at his door, he said. They were looking for his wife.

Extreme heat wave in Ontario continues for Canada Day

As much of Ontario swelters through Canada Day, advocates warn that vulnerable populations are at the greatest risk from the extreme heat.

Man dies after falling off boat into river near Peterborough; boat operator charged

A 39-year-old Oshawa man has died after falling off a boat into the Otonabee River near Peterborough, Ont.

Provincial police say the man went into the water Tuesday afternoon after another boat passed by while he and three others were travelling on the river, and that he was not wearing a life-jacket.

Police say the boat’s operator was arrested after officers determined the group had been drinking, and the operator was later charged with operation causing death and impaired operation.

1 person arrested in Scarborough stabbing

One person was arrested and another was transported to a hospital after a reported stabbing inside a Scarborough residence on Canada Day.

Toronto police were called to the area of Ellesmere and Meadowvale Roads just after 2 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a victim with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to a hospital for treatment.

Investigators say the victim and the suspect were known to each other.
