ÉVIAN-LES-BAINS — Montreal-based Marconi Technologies has become the first Canadian company to land a contract under the SAFE defence procurement agreement Canada signed with the European Union.

Toronto police vehicle involved in collision while responding to stolen car investigation
A Toronto police vehicle has been involved in a collision in North York while responding to a stolen car investigation.
Officers were called to the area of Sheppard Avenue West and Jane Street just before noon on Monday to reports of a vehicle theft.
Police located the vehicle and initiated a stop. A scout car was then involved in a collision.
Lane closures are in effect in the Keele Street and Wilson Avenue area and delays are expected.

On July 1, big changes for millions of auto insurance policy holders across Ontario take effect, but a lot of drivers still have questions about how it impacts them.

Man and woman facing attempted murder charges in connection to Scugog stabbing
A man and a woman have been charged with attempted murder after a stabbing in Scugog back in May.
Durham police were called to a park in the area of Water Street and Mary Street on May 13 around 9:15 p.m. for reports of an armed person.
Once on the scene, officers found a man suffering from stab wounds. He was taken to a trauma centre in serious, life-threatening condition. His condition was later upgraded to stable.

GRIMSBY — Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. has signed a deal to buy Andrew Peller Ltd. in an offer that puts an enterprise value of $579 million on the Canadian wine producer.

Federal officials cite decline in opioid-related deaths but warn progress is fragile
OTTAWA — The federal government says the toxic drug crisis continues to have devastating effects despite a drop in opioid-related deaths last year.
Toxicity deaths declined by 23 per cent in 2025 due to several factors, including naloxone distribution and changes to the drug supply, federal health officials said Monday.
Opioid-related hospitalizations also decreased by 12 per cent last year, the government said.
Officials stressed, however, that these changes are uneven and progress remains fragile.

4 people facing drug, firearm charges after Durham assault launches investigation
Four people have been charged after a Durham Region assault launched a joint investigation between Durham and Toronto police.
The Durham police investigation began in April 2026 when two victims were allegedly threatened and assaulted with a firearm.
A search warrant was executed, alongside the Toronto Police Service Gun and Gang Task Force, at a Toronto residence on June 3. A suspect was arrested police say drugs, a prohibited firearm magazine and ammunition were seized.

Statistics Canada reports manufacturing sales up 4.2 per cent in April at $77.1B
OTTAWA — Statistics Canada says manufacturing sales rose 4.2 per cent to $77.1 billion in April, as the petroleum and coal product group hit a record high.
Petroleum and coal product sales jumped 22.6 per cent to $11.8 billion, following a 25.5 per cent increase in March, helped by higher volumes as several refineries ramped up production after maintenance shutdowns.
Total manufacturing sales in constant dollars rose 1.8 per cent in April.
