Prime Minister Mark Carney is heading to Evian-les-Bains in France for the G7 summit, a day after U.S. President Donald Trump announced an agreement had been reached to end the conflict in Iran.

Trump announced the deal Sunday, adding that he authorized an end to the U.S. blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, but later said the strait wouldn’t open until Friday when the deal is officially signed.

Ottawa to introduce privacy, clean drinking water legislation this week

OTTAWA — The federal government will introduce two major bills in the last days of the Parliamentary sitting, focusing on privacy and ensuring First Nations have access to clean drinking water.

The Liberal government has given notice it will bring forward a long-promised update to Canada’s private-sector privacy law.

The bill is expected to include protections for children’s data as well as measures ensuring Canadians’ data is not used for surveillance pricing.

Porter Airlines betting travellers will embrace Montreal’s second airport

MONTREAL — Porter Airlines is betting travellers will embrace a new passenger terminal at Montreal Metropolitan Airport, on Montreal’s South Shore.

Commercial service begins today from the new terminal in Saint-Hubert, with Porter launching flights to 11 Canadian destinations, including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto, marking a major expansion of its passenger service.

Chief executive Michael Deluce says bookings have already exceeded expectations and he predicts the airport will quickly become “the talk of the town.”

Military police directed to stop accepting sexual offence complaints

OTTAWA — Starting today, military police will no longer accept Criminal Code sexual offence complaints, in anticipation of passage of the Liberal government’s military justice system reform bill.

Bill C-11 will strip the military of its jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute sexual offences involving Canadian Armed Forces members committed within the country, and hand those cases over to the civilian justice system.

The legislation follows on past recommendations from former Supreme Court justices Morris Fish and Louise Arbour, the current Governor General.

Victim identified in ‘gruesome’ North York homicide investigation

Toronto police have identified the victim of a “gruesome” homicide that was reported in North York early Sunday morning.

Authorities say 32-year-old Erik Safar of Toronto was killed in what investigators describe as a “targeted” attack in the city’s west end.
