Man charged with attempted murder after stabbings of Jewish men in London

LONDON (AP) — A 45-year-old man was charged Friday with attempted murder in in London, the latest in a string of attacks that have sparked fear and anger in Britain’s Jewish community.

Police said Essa Suleiman faces two counts of the charge related to the attack in Golders Green. He also faces a third count of attempted murder over an incident elsewhere in the city earlier the same day that left a man with minor injuries.

3-vehicle collision shuts down section of QEW in Oakville

Community supporters of the Sheldon Centre for Outdoor Education near Alliston, Ont. are raising concerns that the Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) budget plan is to cut the centre’s outdoor learning curriculum.

“We’ve had no students here for over a year,” Sharon Edmonds, a member of the Friends of Sheldon said. “We want answers from the Toronto District School Board and we want to know what the plan is with regards to this centre.”

1 person killed in downtown Hamilton shooting: police

One person has died after a shooting in downtown Hamilton on Thursday night, according to police.

Officers say they responded to reports of a shooting at 191 Main West just before 6:30 p.m.

“Upon arrival one male victim was located with injuries consistent with a gunshot and was transported to hospital in critical condition,” police said to CityNews. “They have since been pronounced deceased.”

Massive explosion at NYC home sends police officers flying

NEW YORK (AP) — A massive, fiery explosion at a house in Queens sent several New York City police officers flying through the air early Thursday morning as they were responding to a call of a man inside armed with a knife and the smell of gas.

Eight officers were treated for minor injuries — including burns and at least one head laceration — after the blast, and all of the people who were inside the building have been accounted for, though several were taken to a hospital, police said.

J. Craig Venter, who mapped the first draft of the human genome and helped scientists understand how genes shape our lives, died Wednesday. He was 79.

Venter’s death was announced by the J. Craig Venter Institute, a genomics research group with locations in La Jolla, California, and Rockville, Maryland. The institute said he died in San Diego after being hospitalized for side effects from a recent cancer treatment.

TTC granted no-board report, could result in union lockout ahead of World Cup matches
