Carney insists IRGC members are kept out of Canada after Iranian official turned away
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney insists his government is doing an effective job of keeping Iranians associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps out of the country after one former IRGC official was granted a visa.
When asked today about Iranian Football Federation president Mehdi Taj being denied entry to Canada earlier this week, Carney said he can’t talk about individual cases due to privacy legislation.
Online news outlet Iran International reported Monday that Taj was granted a temporary resident visa that allowed him to enter Canada, despite his ties to the IRGC
Shaggy, Lupe Fiasco, Tom Cochrane to headline CNE concert lineup
Jamaican-American reggae star Shaggy, Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco and homegrown hall-of-famer Tom Cochrane are among the artists set to play the Canadian National Exhibition’s concert series this year.
Organizers of the annual end-of-summer event at Toronto’s Exhibition Place announced the first wave of headliners at the CNE, beginning with Fiasco on Aug. 21.

A man has been killed in a daytime shooting in North York’s Wenderly Park Thursday.
Officers were called to Marlee and Glengrove avenues around 12:25 p.m. for reports of a shooting.
The victim, an adult male, was located with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on the scene.

A judge has granted an injunction ordering an Alberta separatist group to remove from its website a database of private information – including names and addresses — of close to three million provincial voters.
The Edmonton judge granted the injunction Thursday morning at the request of Elections Alberta, which is investigating how the list was obtained by the separatist group and if it was illegal.

MONTREAL — Canadian officials turned away a Brazilian woman at border crossings three times in the days before she got lost in the woods and died of hypothermia near the U.S. border in 2024.
The 36-year-old woman likely died around Jan. 15, 2024, after entering Canada through a forested area near Coaticook, Que., and spending an extended period of time outdoors, according to the April 15 report that was signed by Quebec coroner Donald Nicole.

Two Canadians detained by Israel off Greek coast: flotilla organizer
A flotilla organizer from Montreal says two Canadians were detained by Israel after the boats they were sailing on were intercepted overnight during a mission to break the nearly 20-year naval blockade of Gaza.
