More than 930 fires were burning across Canada on Monday, the national wildland fire summary shows.

Many blazes continued to threaten communities in their path, especially in Ontario where evacuations have displaced approximately 1,800 people.

A Toronto man is facing stunt driving charges after Durham Regional Police attempted a traffic stop in Oshawa last week.

Officers initiated a traffic stop in the Coldstream Drive and Ritson Road area after seeing a driver in an Acura sedan driving in an unsafe manner.

The male driver did not stop and fled from police. The driver then lost control of the car and struck two unoccupied parked vehicles. He then tried to flee on foot before being taken into custody.

Statistics Canada says customers paid a lot more for travel services last month, particularly in Toronto and Vancouver — the country’s host cities for the World Cup.

The agency says the cost of traveller accommodation for June rose about 20 per cent year-over-year in Ontario and British Columbia.

It says rental car prices rose nearly seven per cent across the country compared to June 2025 as travel demand increased.

Toronto police are investigating after officers found evidence of gunfire inside a motel room in the city’s east end late Monday morning.

Police were called around 10:29 a.m. to a motel near Kingston Road and Bellamy Road for reports of a firearm discharge. When officers arrived, they located damage to the walls consistent with gunfire.

No injuries were reported, and police say no victim or suspect was located at the scene. No arrests have been made.

PORT HARDY — A magnitude 5.6 earthquake has struck under the ocean off Vancouver Island.

Earthquakes Canada says the quake happened at 11:41 p.m. local time on Sunday 219 kilometres southwest of Port Hardy on Vancouver Island’s northern tip.

It struck about 10 kilometres beneath the surface of the ocean floor, and the federal agency says there was no risk of tsunami.
