PlayStation 4 console and game sales decline as PS5 approaches

In a nutshell: The PlayStation 4 has been a resounding success for Sony, but with its successor arriving this year, sales declined 25 percent over the holiday season. There were 6.1 million units sold in the three months ending December 31, 2019, down from 8.1 million units during the same period one year earlier.

Sony’s Q3 results for the financial year 2019 show that sales in its Game and Network Services segment, of which the PS4

This DualShock 4 connected to a treadmill makes Death Stranding a lot less fun

From out in left field: What is Death Stranding other than a hiking simulator? The bizarre game is hard to put into words, but you are required to do a lot of walking. So it was perhaps inevitable that someone got the idea to take the game to a whole new level.

We have seen and reported on various weird and interesting video game controllers over the years. Whether it is an out-of-the-box (or can) promotional item like Miller’s Beer Can gamepad or elaborate

NASA's air pollution sensor will provide hourly updates on atmosphere quality across North America

In brief: NASA has chosen the Maxar Intelsat 40e geostationary satellite as the host for sending its air pollution sensor into space. The payload will take hourly measurements of atmospheric gases over North America and help in improving air quality forecasting.

NASA says that the Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) instrument will measure North America's atmosphere quality in unprecedented detail during daylight hours when the payload goes into orbit onboard the Intelsat 40e geostationary communications satellite in 2022.

Why it matters: There are some programs that have been part of Windows for decades, such as Notepad, Paint, and WordPad. While useful for quick tasks, they can’t be removed from the operating system, but that’s going to change in an upcoming update.

Notepad and Paint have been installed by Windows automatically since version 1.0 of the operating system launched in 1985. WordPad, meanwhile, has been installed automatically since 1995 with the launch of Windows 95

In context: AMD has big plans for 2020, which can be summarized as "doubling down" on beefier 7nm CPUs and GPUs. Asrock, who is known for its motherboards and PC hardware offerings, has seen its revenues soar thanks to gamers buying its AMD-based motherboards, so the company is expecting even bigger gains for the year ahead.

Microsoft Teams communication platform suffered a temporary outage due to an expired SSL certificate

Oops! Microsoft's enterprise-oriented Teams communication software has gotten better and better as of late. A couple of months ago, the software even made the jump to Linux, opening up its feature set to an entirely new userbase. However, as great as Teams is, it was inaccessible to many users for several hours this morning for reasons unknown (until later).

The service went down without warning, and many users were forced to find alternative ways to communicate with their peers. The timing was especially unfortunate

Artist uses 99 smartphones to create virtual traffic jams in Google Maps

In brief: An artist from Berlin has proven just how easy it can be to manipulate Google Maps' real-time traffic data. With a wagon full of phones, he was able to create virtual traffic jams and presumably reroute traffic, causing others to unnecessarily avoid the area. Clever or dangerous?

Google for well over a decade has used colored overlays in its mapping application to illustrate real-time traffic conditions. Green means smooth sailing, yellow indicates some crowding and red signifies a bona fide traffic jam.
