Shipping delays and supply chain woes impacting this year's holiday shopping

Bottom line: Manufacturers, retailers, and consumers have all been plagued by chip shortages since the introduction of Covid-19 last year. These shortages are now being compounded by shortages of products ranging from plastics to the shipping containers used to move goods around the world. As a result, consumers who rely on online shopping to ensure availability may be losing their advantage.

Many consumers have come to rely on the web to ensure desired products are available and delivered on time for the holidays and other special occasions. Unfortunately for

Chip shortage hits auto industry hard, $210 billion loss expected in 2021

In a nutshell: The global semiconductor shortage has delivered an adverse effect on many technology industries, with the auto industry being one of the worst impacted, according to a new report.

Consulting firm AlixPartners expects the chip shortage will cost the worldwide automotive industry $210 billion in 2021 alone. With continuing shortages around the globe, analysts nearly doubled its forecast of $110 billion in lost revenue it initially expected in May.

Accordingly, this will lead to the production of 7.7 million

Workforce Shortages Could Lead to Further Price Hikes

A tight supply of chips has affected costs and prices of pretty much everything electronics in the last year and a half. Now, there is a new problem looming: shortage of qualified workforce to work at factories that build actual products. As manufacturers have to rise wages, sooner or later they will have to pass their additional costs to their clients and they might have to pass it on to end users.

IPC, a global trade association that unites over 3,000 OEMs,

Chipmakers and electronics manufacturers can't find enough skilled workers

In brief: The shortage of everything from raw materials to chips and other essential components is having a ripple effect on the electronics and auto industries, but that's only the beginning. Suppliers in North America, Asia, and Europe are now facing an even bigger problem—the rising difficulty and cost of finding skilled workers to keep the industry machine going at a time when demand is higher than it's been in years.

The ongoing chip shortage has put a lot of strain on the supply chains of many tech

Renewed lockdowns in Asia threaten supply of important ceramic components in addition to chips

Why it matters: Chips are the stars of the show whenever a new CPU, GPU, or mobile device is announced, but there is a component that is equally important but usually overlooked unless there's a shortage threatening to cause production issues. That component is the humble capacitor, which is used in almost every single device powered by electricity.

The shortage of everything from advanced chips to the lowly $1 display driver chips that power almost every digital device we use has caused a great deal of grief in the tech
