World Santa Congress brings Christmas cheer to the height of summer

AALBORG, Denmark (AP) — While Europe’s still in the throes of summer heat, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the Danish city of Aalborg.

Dozens of Santas, Mrs. Clauses and elves from around the world have descended on Denmark’s fourth-largest city for the Nordic nation’s annual World Santa Claus Congress, a colorful midsummer tradition for decades.

First staged at an amusement park near Copenhagen in 1957, the congress moved to Aalborg on Denmark’

Why is PM Carney putting a Conservative in the senate?

Prime Minister Mark Carney has made his first Senate appointments — including a sitting Conservative MP and the PM’s former principal secretary.

When Justin Trudeau became prime minister, he ended the practice of making partisan appointments to the Senate, kicking every Liberal senator out of his caucus, and creating an independent panel to make senate recommendations. But now, Carney seems to be going back to the old way of doing things — with a twist.

Host Maria Kestane speaks with Eleanor Wand, a political reporter from the Hill Times ,

Iran’s attacks on Gulf ships ‘unacceptable’ and ‘unjustified’: Foreign Minister Anand

JEDDAH — Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand called it “unacceptable” that Iran has launched attacks on commercial ships in recent days as it attempts to tighten its grip over the Strait of Hormuz.

The comments follow new airstrikes by the United States against Iran early Thursday, with Tehran firing at Kuwait and Qatar.

The escalating hostilities have upended a June ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the war the United States launched against Iran earlier this year.

OTTAWA — Canada is putting international law as one of its top priorities at the United Nations — as others accuse Ottawa of pulling its punches.

Canada’s UN ambassador David Lametti says international rules are “under strain” by major and regional powers, and that Ottawa is alarmed by countries killing civilians, aid workers and UN staff.

“I don’t think anyone’s attacking humanitarian law,” he told The Canadian Press in a recent interview. “They’re not being attacked directly, they’re

PM Carney gifted pistol by Turkey’s president at NATO

JEDDAH — Prime Minister Mark Carney was gifted a personalized pistol and ammunition by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the NATO summit.

Global Affairs Canada says the RCMP is having the weapon decommissioned so it no longer fires and that the ammunition was left in Turkey.

The government will look for a home for the gift, potentially a museum.

Carney is in Jeddah today to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at
