Canada posts largest trade surplus in four years at $4.2B in May

OTTAWA — Canada’s merchandise trade surplus increased to $4.2 billion in May, the largest surplus in four years, as exports rose to a record high, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

The agency said the result compared with a surplus of $3.4 billion in April, which was revised from its initial reading of $2.7 billion.

BMO senior economist Robert Kavcic said Canadian trade surpluses can come and go quickly with swings in oil prices.

Heat wave blamed for nearly 40 Toronto emergency room visits: public health

Toronto Public Health says nearly 40 heat-related emergency department visits were recorded during last week’s heat wave that scorched the city.

Officials say Toronto hospitals reported a total of 39 heat-related ER visits from June 30 until July 4, when Environment Canada’s orange-level heat alert was in effect .

The highest number was recorded at the peak of the heat wave on July 2, with 15 ER visits.

NATO looks to Saab to build up to 10 surveillance planes using Canadian jets

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte says the alliance is looking to work with Swedish manufacturer Saab on up to 10 radar jets largely built in Canada.

Rutte told an audience at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, that its current fleet is to be replaced by the GlobalEye system, as it is nearing the end of its lifespan.

B.C. attorney general to provide update on legal options after deadly mass shooting

VANCOUVER — The British Columbia government says it’s exploring legal options after the mass shooting where eight people were killed in Tumbler Ridge.

Attorney General Niki Sharma is expected to meet with media today about those options, five months after the deadly shooting in the community in northeastern B.C.

Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger said in May that the police investigation into the shooting was in its final stages, and a coroner’s inquest had been called.

Funeral for Montreal police officer killed in shooting set to be held today

MONTREAL — The public memorial for the Montreal police officer killed in a brazen outdoor shooting last month will be held at the Bell Centre today.
